2026 Mosaic and Ledger Stones Repair
Over the summer we hope to carry out a project of repair and conservation work to the floor mosaic!
Designed by Sir Aston Webb in 1879, the mosaic with its distinctive Christian designs and vibrant colours is considered an excellent example of 19th century craftsmanship.
Since the 2022/23 reordering works, the mosaic and ledger stones have been uncovered (having previously been covered by a rubber-backed carpet), and now form part of the new floor. The mosaic, although by design are sturdy enough to withstand regular footfall, have over the years become loose and since they have been exposed there has been a notable deterioration in the condition of the area.
The work will focus on consolidating the edges of the mosaic and making the area secure to remain part of the floor. The mosaic will then be cleaned and a light protective wax coating applied.
As part of the repairs and conservation works to this area we will be undertaking some repointing and gentle cleaning to the surrounding ledger stones. The 17th century stones, which were re-laid during the Aston Webb reordering, bare the following names John Nash, Francis Walker, Mary Walker (wife), Mary Walker (daughter), Mr John Cocks, Mr Thomas Cocks, Mr Francis Rea, John Rea, Susanna Rea, Susanna Sarah Rea, Jacob Rea, James Rea, Jackman Rea.
If you are a relative of the deceased and would like more information about this, please contact the Buildings Project Manager at stella@allsaintsworcester.org.uk
